Gunfire erupts on the streets of Brooklyn as a police detective chases a fleeing suspect.

"I heard a gunshot go off then saw a man over a woman on the ground," said Rebecca Weilbrenner, an eye witness at the start of the event. "The man told everyone to get down and then ran off towards the train station."

The man was police detective James "Popeye" Doyle. The woman on the ground was Betty Badluck, she was killed by the shooter.

Doyle then commandeered a vehicle driving through as the shooter, identified as Pierre Nicoli, made a getaway on a train.

While on the train Nicoli shot a transit police officer named Sonny Grosso.

Doyle drove haphazardly after the train. As he doges across both lanes in pursuit of the train Doyle managed to: swideswipe a car, crash into a truck, almost hit a mother and her stroller, and crashes into a wall.

I Have a Dream

"I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation."
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered this opening statement in his emotional "I Have a Dream" speech. From the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, King cried out his decree against injustice and segregation to hundreds of thousands of supporters.

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'"

King bellows out this with an emotional tag that was felt by all who were present. He cries out for freedom and justice. He cries out for equality and an end to segregation. 

But, King also cries out to his fellow African Americans to "conduct [their] struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline." He wants them to turn away from violence and continue in their non-violent protests. 

"Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred... Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force." 

King also tells people to not distrust all whites because many were present at that moment. He says how they can not walk alone.

Saturday Morning's Alright for Dentention

Portsmouth School Board discusses a notion to approve a new policy on possible Saturday detentions.

Initiated by School Board member Tim Steele, the policy would require students who have disciplinary problems during the week to return to school for a special Saturday morning session. It would cost about $3,000 per year for staffing.

Steele says this is being proposed to reduce the number of in-house suspensions. "I know this isn't good news for parents, but I hope the threat of Saturday classes will make the students think twice before breaking the school rules."

Resident Bob Farely agreed with Steele saying that "parents aren't teaching their kids any discipline, so the kids have no respect for rules
